Why is UNL providing a new antivirus program?
UNL reviews all software license agreements during the life of the contract for performance, value and cost. Symantec Endpoint has been rated highly by numerous studies and is rated as a Magic Quadrant leader product by Gartner. UNL, through its membership in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), was able to significantly reduce its antivirus costs through the CIC-negotiated licensing agreement.
Who can use UNL's antivirus program? Can I use it on my home computer too?
Antivirus is available for all students, faculty and staff for all University and personally-owned computers. A My.UNL login and password is required to download the application.
Will I first have to uninstall my current antivirus program?
No. UNL's antivirus downloads will uninstall any existing anti-virus programs and replace them with Symantec Endpoint Protection.
I am currently paying for a AV program. Do I have to use the UNL-provided antivirus?
Using the UNL-provided antivirus is not required, but you may be required to use an antivirus program with current definitions for your computer to be granted access on UNL's network. Antivirus is one of several layers of security to ensure the integrity of our network and to protect UNL data and infrastructure.
To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:
Open System by clicking the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
Under System, you can view the system type.
If your computer is running Windows XP, do the following:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
If you don't see "x64 Edition" listed, then you're running the 32-bit version of Windows XP.
If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP.
When is the deadline to update my UNL antivirus to Symantec Endpoint?
The UNL-provided antivirus is currently available for download. In January, following the Holiday break, students will receive onscreen messages as they connect to RESnet. The messages will inform users that the software will need to be installed within a 1 month period. It will direct users to the antivirus website to download the software. If antivirus is not installed or updated, the user's computer will be quarantined and not allowed access on the network until antivirus is installed.
Is UNL providing an antivirus protection solution for mobile devices?
Not at this time, but UNL is investigating the concept.
What do I need to do if the antivirus detects a virus or malware on my computer?
Symantec Endpoint will "clean" and remove the file without any user interaction.
